Kitchen Remodel Cost Breakdown: Where Your Money Really Goes

Kitchens are the heart of the home, and also one of the most expensive rooms to renovate. It’s common to get a quote and feel your stomach flip. Where does all that money go? And how can you make smart choices without sacrificing the kitchen you want?

Here’s a clear look at the typical cost breakdown, plus ideas to keep the project under control. Keep in mind that prices vary widely by region, materials and the size of your kitchen, so use these as rough guides and get local quotes.

    The big picture

A kitchen remodel can range from a few thousand dollars for light updates to six figures for a high-end overhaul. Many mid-range remodels fall somewhere in between. The good news is that the budget usually divides into predictable categories.

    Typical cost categories

Cabinets and hardware: about 25 to 35 percent. Cabinets are often the single biggest expense. Stock cabinets are the most affordable, semi-custom offers more options and custom costs the most. Hardware, such as handles and pulls, adds up too.

Labor and installation: about 15 to 25 percent. This covers demolition, carpentry, installation, painting and general contracting. Skilled labor isn’t cheap, but good installation matters more than most people realize.

Appliances: about 10 to 20 percent. Refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers and range hoods vary enormously. Think about what you cook and what features you’ll actually use.

Countertops: about 8 to 15 percent. Laminate is the most budget-friendly, followed by butcher block, quartz and granite. Natural stone and specialty materials cost more.

Flooring: about 5 to 7 percent. Options include vinyl, tile, hardwood and laminate.

Plumbing and fixtures: about 4 to 6 percent. Sinks, faucets and any moved plumbing lines.

Electrical and lighting: about 3 to 5 percent. New circuits, outlets and fixtures. Older homes might need upgrades to meet code.

Backsplash and wall finishes: about 2 to 4 percent.

Permits and design fees: about 2 to 5 percent or more. Larger remodels may need a designer or architect.

    The “hidden” costs

Some expenses tend to surprise homeowners:

    • Unexpected repairs. Once walls open, you might find water damage, old wiring or pests.
    • Temporary kitchen. You’ll likely spend extra on takeout, a hotplate or a temporary sink.
    • Delays. Special orders can take weeks or months, and waiting costs money.
    • Moving things. Relocating plumbing, gas lines or walls increases the cost significantly.
    • Disposal and cleanup.

Build a contingency fund of at least 10 to 20 percent of your budget.

    Where to save

    1. Keep the layout. Moving sinks, stoves and walls is expensive. Working with your existing footprint saves thousands.
    2. Refinish or reface cabinets. If the boxes are solid, new doors and paint can transform the look for far less than replacement.
    3. Choose mid-range finishes. You can mix budget and premium. Splurge where it matters, such as a durable countertop, and save on backsplash or hardware.
    4. Shop sales and floor models. Appliances are often discounted during holiday sales.
    5. Do some work yourself. Painting, demolition and cleanup can be DIY if you’re comfortable. Leave plumbing, gas and electrical to licensed pros.
    6. Compare multiple quotes and get them itemized.

    Where not to cut corners

    • Structural, plumbing and electrical work
    • Quality ventilation
    • Proper waterproofing
    • Cabinet hardware that you use every day
    • Hiring a licensed, insured contractor

Cutting corners here can cost far more later.

    Don’t forget permits

Most kitchen remodels that involve plumbing, electrical or structural changes need permits. Make sure your contractor handles them and that the work is inspected. It affects safety, insurance and resale.

    Is it worth it?

Kitchens are popular with buyers, but you rarely recover 100 percent of the cost in resale value. A modest, well-executed remodel typically earns the best return. Over-the-top luxury upgrades may not make sense unless you plan to stay long-term and enjoy them.

    Make a plan

Write down your must-haves, nice-to-haves and things you can skip. Decide on a realistic total and set aside a buffer. Prioritize what matters for how you live, not what looks good on social media.

    Final thoughts

A kitchen remodel is a big project, but with clear numbers it’s less scary. Know where the money goes, plan for surprises and choose where to invest. The result should be a kitchen that works beautifully for years.
